Botanical explorations at Cape Herschel, a small peninsula on the relatively oceanic coast of eastern Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, have yielded a flora which includes 68 species of vascular plants, species of mosses, and 44 species of lichens.

While reading "the red book of Pottiaceae" (Zander ) the text and illustrations of Hilpertia gave the first author a hint as to a possible identity of a plant he collected in at Tanquary Fiord, Ellesmere Island, Arctic Canada, while joining Syl-via Edlund in field work.
The identity of this plant was confirmed by the second author as. The Arctic, which covers approximately 30% (2, km2) of the land area of Canada, has a triangular shape. Its southern border is the Arctic tree line, the northern limit of trees.
There are three known subpopulations in Nunavut, all from the Tanquary Fiord area of Quttinirpaaq National Park on northern Ellesmere Island. These are Muskox Wall Creek (where the species was found at four discrete habitats), Yellowstone Creek (one habitat), and McDonald River (three habitats).
